The 1994 Criminal Justice Act banned music ‘characterised by the emission of repetitive beats’. This legislation directly impacted the UK rave scene, giving authorities the right to restrict this new found subculture of rave beginning in the the late 1980s in the UK. These ‘repetitive beats’ gave people a sense of freedom, an outlet for escape. 2021 faces the same restrictions on the scene due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Rave forever being the biggest crime. My practise explores topics from ex party goers memories of sweaty dance floors, to experiencing Friday night from a bouncers perspective. My work creates a welcoming space to start conversation on this forever secretive and euphoric scene.
