I have always been naturally drawn to collage as I find that I can express my practice through this medium easily and it allows me to be more versatile. The use of collage has allowed me to connect these memories that are held within a container, evoking emotive responses of nostalgia. I like the way collage creates new narratives, as it’s a medium that collects and combines, bringing together things that may create tension and bring up question.

Familiar Things 1.1

Our possessions represent our extended selves. They provide a sense of past and tell us who we are, where we have come from and perhaps where we are going. Throughout the last four years, I have moved around into different households with different people. I am a natural observer and spend time taking in the surroundings I am in. I observehow objects have naturally been placed and what meaning they may hold. I have been taking photographs around this subject, mainly of objects that are personal to other people and myself. The purpose of this project is to bring together the objects that have surrounded me throughout the last four years. The different rooms within this book express rooms of a house. This ‘house’ is a resemblance of the past put together in one. The collages are also representing the concept of time, space and composition.
